The CFA mission is to preserve and promote the health of the Catoctin Mountain forest for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
The purposes for which the Catoctin Forest Alliance is formed are:
- To collaborate with local, state, and federal officials and organizations to enrich the experience of visitors to the public lands of the Catoctin Mountains by enhancing public communication, outreach, and educational programs to inform and engage the public; foster dialogue and feedback; and encourage volunteer participation;
- To promote, maintain and preserve the historical significance of the Catoctin forest region and the existing historic displays and structures;
- To protect and preserve the integrity of environmental processes, wildlife habitat, air quality, healthy soil, vigorous forests and understory, and to strive for a pollutant-free watershed;
- To motivate all potential public and private support groups to develop an ecological and economically sustainable land management strategy; and
- To expand the base of public and private resources for routine and extraordinary needs in the furtherance of the foregoing purposes.
In February 2010 the following goals and strategies were adopted by the Catoctin Forest Alliance:
Goal 1: Increased collaboration with local, state and federal officials and organizations to enrich the experience of visitors to the public lands of the Catoctin Mountains through public communication, outreach and educational programs on environmental issues
Strategies:
- Identify CFA’s role to facilitate improvements in this area
- Identify environmental issues of concern
- Foster dialogue with government officials
- Encourage volunteer participation
Goal 2: Vibrant collaborative relationships with other organizations to promote, maintain and preserve the historical significance of the Catoctin forest region and the existing historic displays and structures
Strategies:
- Identify stakeholders / partners to develop corporate relationships
- Conduct research on historical significance
- Establish communications plan
Objectives: Designate communication liaison to represent CFA with one voice
Goal 3: Increased community awareness of CFA goals and programs which protect and preserve the integrity of environmental processes, wildlife habitat, air quality, healthy soil, vigorous forests and understory, and a pollutant-free watershed
Strategies:
- Develop newsletter
- Enhance/expand web site
- Provide education on the Catoctin Mountain region resources
- Market parks to community
Objectives: Establish Artist in Residence program; Develop powerpoint presentations for groups
Goal 4: Enhanced networking of all potential public and private support groups to contribute to the strategy development process by commenting to both the park system and government entities on land management issues.
Strategies:
- Explore contacts with landowners
- Communicate / educate constituent groups
Goal 5: To expand the base of public and private resources for routine and extraordinary needs in the furtherance of the foregoing purposes – fundraising and friend-raising.

- Identify resources and needs
- Expand monetary resources and membership
- Track / report accountability
